During the course of August 1, west and south-west of the city of PSKOV, our troops continued their offensive, capturing more than 60 settlements: among them such large population centers as BOROVENKI, SHELEKHOVA, BEIAS, JAUNANNA, and railroad station LOTENE.
North-west and west of the city of DAUGAVPILS (DVINSK), our troops, while
pushing on ahead, took by force more than 200 population centers, including the
town of LIVANI, large settlements DIGNAIA, SLOTAS, RUBENE, ASARE, GARSENE,
DIDSODE, ROKISKIS, ZIOBISKIS, and PANDELIS and railroad stations DIGNAIA,
ROKISKIS, and GINDZULAI.
North-west and west of the city of JELGAVA (MITAVA), our troops seized city
and railroad station TUKUMS, a district center of the Latvian SSR, town and
railroad station DOBELE, and also captured after fighting more than 100
settlements, including KLAPNALNS, ZUKSTE, BEREMUIZA, and railroad stations
PRAVINU, SLAMPE, ZUKSTE, BUDAS, LIVBERZE and BRAKSTI. In that way, our troops
cut off all routes leading from the Baltic area to East Prussia.
Troops of the 3rd BELARUSSIAN Front, overwhelming the enemy's stubborn
resistance, stormed and captured an important strategic center of communications
and a strongpoint of the Germans — the city and fortress of KAUNAS (KOVNO) — and
also took by force more than 300 settlements, among them such large population
centers, as GANUSEVICI, VENDZIAGOLA, ANTOGYNI, BOBTI, RINGVALIDSKI, AZERES,
JURA, BOGATA, DYIDVIZE, GIZE, SUSNIKI, VIDZGAILI and railroad stations OLKSNIANI
and MAZUCE.
West and south-west of the city of BIELSK, our troops mounted offensive
operations in the course of which they seized more than 100 settlements,
including large population centers PYATKOWO, TOPCZEWO, GLINNIKI, BRYANSK, RUDKA,
LEMPICA, STADNIKI and DROGICZYN.
West of the city of SIEDLCE, our troops captured the city of KALUSZYN, and
also seized after fighting more than 30 other settlements, among them NIWISKA,
ZIEMAKI, CZARNOWAZ, SENNA, SLUCHOCZYN, and GROSZKI, and railroad stations
KOSZEWNICA and MROZY. Our troops took Lieutenant-General FRANEK, commander of
the defeated 73rd German Infantry Division, and his staff, prisoner.
On the other sectors of the front, all was relatively quiet.
During July 31, our troops on all fronts disabled or destroyed 37 German
tanks. A total of 28 enemy planes were brought down in air battles or by
anti-aircraft fire.
